about..Ora Bags are made from high quality luxury leather hides, ranging in finish and hand, from supple pebbly black upholstery weight hides, to specialized oil-tanned heavey weight hides. All hardware and trim are industrial quality. Each season there are a few pieces that are specifically made from recycled leather, sourced from carefully selected vintage leather garments – for Spring 2013 the crystal pouch necklaces and the Morgan Tote bag feature recycled leather elements. All Ora products are hand made one by one by Randi in the Ora studio, located in a rustic old building in East Van, flanked by motorcycle shops and jam spaces.
Randi shares an equal love for the design process and the role of the maker. With each Ora piece, she does her best to blend function and aesthetic. Drawing from her diverse background of craft skills, she aims for quality and durability every time. More than anything else, the medium of leather inspires Randi’s design process, in addition to vintage inspirations, and the influences of her life long associations with the equestrian world.
An Island girl by birth, Randi found herself whisked away from the lush green seaside of Vancouver Island out to the rolling sagebrush hills of the Highland Valley at the age of 6. Left with an eternal longing to live by the sea, it wasn’t until age 16 that Randi realized she had fallen in love with that high dry landscape, only after years of adventuring the surrounding woods and fields on horseback. Those small town backroads, tree forts, lakesides and endless trails through the pines, have stayed with Randi to this day after having returned to BC’s coast to live by the sea once again. Although Randi calls Vancouver home, she escapes as often as possible, passing many miles around BC, Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, and trips here and there to warmer or chillier places like Costa Rica, Mexico, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Scotland, England, and beyond.
Randi’s diverse educational background includes a Diploma in Fine Arts from TRU in Kamloops, an Advanced Textile Arts Certificate from Capilano University in North Vancouver, trade certification in Automotive Upholstery and Industrial Sewing from Kwantlen College, and she graduated from Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design in 2007 as the Overall Achievement Golden Bobbin Award Winner.
